Care

A great number of the long term care facilities (over 50%) in the USA have locked their doors to the outside. This is out of concern for safety based on staff and their ability to observe residents. The ability to provide accessible outdoor spaces for those of us who will be in long term care homes is an issue that can be improved with thoughtful design.

Silverado Memory Care - Peoria, Arizona - A secure courtyard allows residents open access to nature and activities including a putting course, walking paths and custom accessible garden planters.

Cartmell Home - Palestine, Texas - A dynamic renovation of an existing care facility and the addition of this secure courtyard leads to an increased level of family visitation and better orientation inside the building.

Eden Home - New Braunfels, Texas - A courtyard renovation plan for an existing assisted living facility.
